Northern Bypass: An Act of Vandalism

With Suffolk County Council announcing the launch of a public consultation this summer, the northern bypass is, once again, back on the agenda.

Ipswich Green Party members and supporters discussed this issue at their monthly meeting and agreed that building a Northern bypass would be like an act of vandalism. Those present recognised that the congestion - and resulting air pollution - Ipswich experiences at peak times is a major problem, but the solution is not new roads.

A local Green Party member said, "We are too quick to simply build yet more roads." Another said, "Making the most of the existing infrastructure and developing a fully integrated public transport system would help more than any bypass would."

Branch Coordinator, Andy Patmore said, "We're in favour of new development where it's needed, but we must always explore other alternatives to blindly building new roads that will become as congested as the roads they hope to relieve. A guided bus route like the one found in Cambridge, better use of the existing Orwell Bridge and improved public transport connections that have more emphasis on service than profit would be a better starting point."
